Holy Ascension Orthodox Church is a mission parish located in the I'On Community, a New Urbanist development across the Cooper River from Charleston. In association with a licensed architect, Andrew designed this church for a prominent corner lot, drawing from Byzantine and Russian architectural forms, and using materials and colors that are traditional for Charleston. The masonry walls are 16" thick. The roof is copper. The interior is lime plaster designed to support iconography in silica paint. Andrew crafted the columns, chandeliers, and many other details himself, while guiding other parishioners in building the doors and onion domes. The church was consecrated in May 2008. The iconography and landscaping will be completed over many more years. Construction Slideshow
