Ss. Joseph and Andrew Eastern Orthodox Church is a small mission located on twelve acres of beautiful farmland near Asheville. In association with a licensed architect, Andrew has been commissioned to design their permanent church, bell tower, parish hall, and rectory. Andrew decided to design the complex like a Medieval monastery, grouping the buildings close together within a stone wall. The church is Byzantine in style, but other buildings are inspired by vernacular American architecture. Andrew designed the ensemble to feel as if it had evolved organically long ago, an expression of American Orthodoxy as it might have been. It has elements that hearken to the Medieval Orient, but at the same time it is simple, calm, and practical, at home in rural Appalachia. The parish hall and rectory were built in 2007.
